» Major cities in Vietnam: :

Hanoi

Hanoi is the capital and second-largest city of Vietnam. In 1010 Hanoi, at that time known by the name of Thang Long, became capital of the first Vietnamese dynasty independent from the Chinese.

The city received its present name, Hanoi, only in 1831. However, at that time not Hanoi but Hue was the capital of the Vietnamese empire.

The city is located on the right bank of the Red River. Hanoi is located at 1,760 km (1,090 mi) north of Ho Chi Minh City.

The French administratively divided the country into the colony Cochin China (in the South) and the protectorates Annam and Tonkin. Hanoi became the capital of the protectorate Tonkin.

Hue

Hue is the capital city of Thừa Thiên – Hue province, Vietnam. Between 1802 and 1945, it was the imperial capital of the Nguyễn Dynasty. As such, it is well known for its monuments and architecture.

With a population of 350,000 Hue is not a particularly large city by present-day Vietnamese standards. But it is full of historical attractions, even though it has suffered more than any other Vietnamese city during the Vietnam War.

The Vietnamese emperor was allowed to stay in office and the imperial court still took care of those government matters, which were of no interest to the French colonial masters.

But over the decades this arrangement undermined the importance of the imperial court for the Vietnamese state. When on August 24, 1945, the last Nguyen emperor, Bao Dai, resigned, this was of no practical relevance to the political situation in the country.

Dalat

Dalat, some 300 kilometers northeast of Ho Chi Minh City, is one of the most un-Vietnamese towns of Vietnam. It is located some 1,500 metros above sea level in the southern reaches of the Annamese Mountain Range.

It was not built by Vietnamese or Cham kings, but by the French colonial masters, who preferred to retreat to Dalat from former Saigon during the hot season.

The town which today counts 130,000 inhabitants was founded only in 1897. The French colonial administration and French traders built large European-style villas to create an atmosphere reminding of France.

In the middle of the town, a small lake (Xuan Huong), and to the North of it a golf course, were laid out. Many of the villas have survived the Vietnam War undamaged and give the town a unique appearance. In the area around the town are several beautiful waterfalls.

Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City is the economic center of Vietnam and the largest city in Vietnam. It was once known asPrey Nokor, an important Khmer seaport prior to annexation by the Vietnamese in the 17th century.

Under the name Saigon it was the capital of the French colony of Cochin China and later of the independent state of South Vietnam from 1955 to 1975. In 1976, Saigon merged with the surrounding province of Gia Định and was officially renamed Hồ Chí Minh City.

The city center is situated on the banks of the Saigon River, 60 kilometers (37 mi) from the South China Sea and 1,760 kilometers (1,094 mi) south of Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam.

At the peak of the Vietnam War the city counted 4.5 million inhabitants. After the reunification of Vietnam the Communist masters reduced the number of inhabitants. However, these measures were by far not as drastic as the according steps taken by the Khmer Rouge in Phnom Penh. By 1996, the population of Ho Chi Minh City has again grown to more than 4 millions.
